What polyaspartic is
Polyaspartic is a type of polyurea coating. It goes on like epoxy but cures much faster, often hardening within an hour or two. That speed is its biggest advantage. Where a full epoxy system can take several days from start to parking, a polyaspartic floor can often be prepped, coated and finished in a single day, with cars back in the garage the next day. It is also naturally UV-stable, so it holds its color and clarity in sunlight that would slowly yellow a standard epoxy.
Why people in Petaluma choose it
Many of our customers have one garage and nowhere else to put the car, the tools or the freezer for more than a day or two. Polyaspartic keeps the disruption short. It is also a good choice for garages with west-facing doors that stay open on sunny afternoons, since it will not amber in the light. And because it cures fast, it works well in the cooler, damper months when slower coatings can take a long time to set. Shorter open time also means less chance of dust, leaves or insects landing in a wet floor on a breezy day.
Prep still matters most
A fast coating does not mean a fast shortcut. Polyaspartic bonds strongly, but only to properly prepared concrete. We diamond grind the whole slab, vacuum it clean and take moisture readings. Clay soils and wet winters mean many slabs here carry moisture, and when they do, we use a moisture-tolerant primer under the polyaspartic. Cracks get filled and ground flush. Only then do we apply the base coat, broadcast flake if you chose it and roll on the clear topcoat. Skipping any of those steps is how one-day floors fail, and we do not skip them.
Systems we install
The most popular option is a full broadcast flake floor with a polyaspartic base and topcoat. It hides dirt, adds grip and goes in quickly. We also install solid color polyaspartic floors for a clean, modern look, and we often use polyaspartic as the topcoat over an epoxy base when a customer wants the bond of epoxy and the UV resistance of polyaspartic. We will recommend a system based on your slab, how you use the space and how quickly you need it back.
How it compares to epoxy
Epoxy is a strong, proven coating with a longer working time, which helps on large or detailed floors like metallic pours. It is usually a bit less expensive per square foot. Polyaspartic costs somewhat more but saves days of downtime, resists yellowing and tends to handle hot tires and abrasion very well. Many garages end up with a hybrid system that uses both. You can compare with our garage floor epoxy page, and we will walk through the trade-offs at your estimate.
Business and farm use
Polyaspartic is a smart choice for businesses that cannot close for long. Auto shops, showrooms and storage buildings can often be coated over a weekend and be back in use on Monday. We have also coated equipment rooms and outbuildings where fast turnaround meant the work did not interrupt a busy season. For heavy traffic, we can build the coating thicker and add more grit to the topcoat.
Weather and timing
Because polyaspartic cures quickly, it is more forgiving in cool weather than many coatings. We still watch the temperature of the slab and the humidity in the air, and on very damp mornings we may adjust the start time. In summer heat, we work in smaller sections so the coating does not set before we can level it. That kind of planning is part of why we only install with trained crews.
Questions
Can I really park the next day?
In most cases, yes. We will confirm based on temperature and the system used.
Does it smell?
There is an odor during application. We ventilate the space and it fades as the coating cures.
Will it yellow?
No. Polyaspartic is UV-stable and holds its color in sunlight.
